Carpet recycling is the best option for disposing of your used carpeting, yet not enough homeowners and businesses today make the effort to recycle their old carpets. Fortunately, there are some initiatives like the Empire Carpet Recycling program which are leading the way in carpet recycling.

The Carpet America Recover Effort (CARE) estimates that over 5 billion pounds of used carpeting is dumped into landfills each year, where can leach a variety of dangerous chemicals into the groundwater. Recycling is the only environmentally safe way of disposing of used carpeting, but when it comes to recycling there are several options to consider.

If your old Empire Carpet is still in good condition, it can be donated to non profit organizations for reuse. Those carpets that are not fit for reuse can be taken to a local carpet reclamation site, such as those sites in your local area administered by CARE.

A new book called" Small Eco Houses" highlights some of the latest sustainable home designs that are less than 1500 square feet. The showcased homes include features like efficient light bulbs, Energy Star appliances and non toxic furniture. These features can add up to a large reduction in environmental impact and energy use.

The smaller size of these dwellings is an eco friendly feature in and of itself, given the need for smaller living spaces as world population continues to rise. The average American home in 2009 was well over 2,000 square feet, which is double the average size from the 1950s. Sizes of new homes have declined slightly since the 2008 recession, as more builders and architects come to the realization that less can be more and that home buyers are demanding smaller homes for various reasons.
